讲座摘要
This talk explores how Appraisal analysis, within the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework, can contribute to a deeper understanding of patients’ experiences of chronic conditions and chronic pain. Drawing on empirical research in health communication and discourse analysis, the presentation focuses on how people living with long‑term illness evaluate their bodies, symptoms, treatments, and interactions with healthcare professionals through language.
With particular attention to the Appraisal system of Attitude, the talk illustrates how evaluative meanings are deployed in personal narratives, interviews, and clinical encounters to construe suffering, legitimacy, uncertainty, and agency. Chronic pain, often described as invisible, subjective, and contested, provides a particularly revealing site for examining how patients negotiate credibility and moral positioning through discourse.
The presentation introduces Appraisal as a practical analytical tool for applied linguistic research in health contexts. By linking fine‑grained linguistic analysis to broader concerns in medical humanities and health communication, the talk highlights the relevance of Appraisal analysis for understanding lived experience, patient‑centred care, and the discursive construction of illness over time.
Overall, the talk argues that Appraisal analysis offers valuable insights into how chronicity is experienced, narrated and negotiated, and demonstrates its relevance to the research agenda of applied linguistics and health discourse studies.
主讲人简介
Mariana Pascual is Associate Professor of Linguistics at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Her research lies at the intersection of discourse studies, health communication, and Systemic Functional Linguistics, with a particular focus on the discursive construction of pain, chronic illness, affect, and agency. She has led and participated in nationally and internationally funded research projects and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes.
